US sanctions have never really worked, because all it does is encourage the country to find out sourcing to other countries, most of which are also unfriendly with the US

look at cuba for another example.

Well, yes and no. It needs to be balanced. GDP is not the only factor to determine a healthy economy. The Iranian government has been forced to subsidize many businesses as well during these times.

Also, many countries have been able to ride out the storm that are greatly connected to the US. Canada's GDP is growing around the same rate. China is around 12%. Hard to say exactly, but an interesting hypothesis.

The sanction is hurting Iranian economy, strengthening mullahs hands, reducing and even removing any chance of freeing up the Iranian society and any reform.
